What is the murder rate in South Africa?

Between October and December 2022, the South African Police Service recorded 7,555 murders. For the same period in 2021, the figure was 6,859, an increase of 10%. Reported attempted murders also increased over the same period from 14,188 to 15,545.

The murder rate – calculated on the basis of national mid-year population estimates (60.6 million by the end of June 2022) – is 12.467 per 100,000 people.
